Because the real world recognisation factor wasnt there a la the main Civ games, the research, buildings and even leaders just boiled down to reading stat numbers because none of them felt cool or interesting. I don't think BE is bad, per se, but it is bland. Go in with a completely open mind, and you might even like it. My advice to people who have not played this game yet, if you're going to try it, don't go in expecting civ. I think that might help explain why some people might not like this game. If this game was instead called "Sid Meier's Epic Space Adventure Colonizing Game", people would've went in expecting something completely different and been positively surprised about this kinda civ5- inspired space adventure colonizing game that's kinda epic. Then you get hit by quests, random events, a confusing looking tech web and weird technobabble about alien hiveminds and robotic xenoburgers and whatnot. Then they start the game and first of all, you're not even controlling a civilization, but rather a colony of some random dude. I think that one of the biggest mistakes they made with this game was naming it "Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth", because people see that and think "civ" immediately. Once again the key word here is immersion, and this diplomacy system makes you think a lot more about who do you want to ally and why. I mean sure, it doesn't take much to have a better diplomacy than civ 6, but the choices you have to make while allying with different leaders are much more interesting and impactful than just "ok gimme 7gpt for this lux ty".
The diplomacy system is way better than Civ 5 or Civ 6. I don't know if this really increases replayability cause I still have so few hours in the game, but I think they're a cool way to make you feel in the game They also force you to play in a slightly different way every time. The flavor texts they provide allow you to "roleplay" as the leader of a colony, having to make decisions in order for your people to survive.
The quests and events are also a fun way to immerse yourself into the setting.
Fighting your enemies with aliens? Hell yeah, that's amazing. The aliens that replace barbarians are terrifying, yet you can make peace with them and even ally them by speccing into harmony. The miasma that chills on random tiles and deals damage to units is not just an annoying game mechanic, it's a mechanic that makes you feel like you truly are in a hostile environment and everything on this planet is out to get you. I just love the concept of colonizing an alien planet and having to fight for survival, and I think this was achieved beautifully. Second, I think this game is cool as hell. Where are these Beyond Earth haters, or is this just reddit circlejerk in action again? I've been playing it for a while and here's a few thoughts and feelings I wanted to share.įirst of all, whenever this game is discussed, someone is quick to mention that "it's not as bad as people claim", yet I've never seen anyone claim it's bad. A couple of days someone posted here that Beyond Earth + DLC + Rising Tide was on sale for a ridiculously low price at greenmangaming so I bought it.
